A skilled environmental planner has joined the Great Ocean Road Coast Committee (GORCC) team, bringing local knowledge and plenty of passion to the protection and enhancement of the local coastline.
GORCC’s new Environmental Projects Coordinator Alex Sedger grew up in Torquay and has a background in environmental science.
The role will see Ms.Sedger secure funding for and manage environmental projects, support the work of environmental volunteers, and work towards GORCC’s highest priority: the protection and enhancement of natural values on the coast.
GORCC Chief Executive Officer Richard Davies said Ms Sedger was a valuable addition to the GORCC and that her extensive experience would result in positive outcomes for the coast.
“Alex has held several planning and project management roles in the past which will help support GORCC’s core business of coastal, environmental works.
“Ms Sedger will consider many factors associated with environmental projects, including but not limited to; community aspirations, coastal processes and competing user group demands,” he said.
Ms.Sedger said her role would include securing vital funding for environmental projects and the employment of skilled conservation workers.
“Environmental projects and related on-ground works are fundamental to GORCC’s objectives and crucial for effective management of Crown land,” she said.
Among Ms. Sedger’s first set of priorities is the release of Fairhaven-Eastern View and Queens Park Draft Master Plans for community consultation this peak season, and a review GORCC’s Native Vegetation and Weeds Action Plan.
“I am also looking to develop and implement a monitoring framework for environmental actions identified in the GORCC Coastal Management Plan.
“It’s exciting to be overseeing plans that restore, enhance and protect the coastal environment, which ultimately benefits the community who love and visit these beautiful areas,” said Ms. Sedger.
Ms. Sedger said she has a strong connection with the local coast, and is looking forward to having a hands on role in its protection.
“I’m excited by the opportunity to make a positive difference both environmentally and in the community.
“Seeing work come to fruition on the ground is hugely rewarding and this position was an opportunity I just had to pursue,” she said.
Ms Sedger said she was looking forward to getting out and about and interacting with community members and groups.
